Internal Family Systems (IFS) is one of today鈥檚 fastest-growing approaches in psychotherapy, used from complex trauma treatment to spiritual direction. Its everyday, story-based language makes it easy to teach鈥攁nd easy to use as self-help.
However, the metaphor-heavy style of IFS might also invite vague speculation and may possibly cause harm when therapist and client don鈥檛 share clearly defined meanings.
This lecture grounds IFS in Fr. Bernard Lonergan鈥檚 analysis of interiority, drawing on earlier psychoanalysis and Husserlian genetic phenomenology to clarify inner multiplicity (鈥減arts鈥) and the dynamics of healing and integration, and reframes multiplicity as local horizons and integration as emergent probability, with observations drawn from clinical practice.
